There are many GOLDEN ERA’S in Heavy Metal and Heavy Music. We concentrated to two GOLDEN AGE’S
October 1981 — to —October 1986. Heavy Metal’s KICK*ASS/ KICK*ASS*METAL period. Because this era specialized in RIFF METAL, no matter the style. The RIFF was the main zeitgeist.
The GOLDEN AGE in heavy metal that occurred in 1993-2003 is my personal favorite this golden age was from 1993 until March 10th, 2003. The 3rd and the Mortal/ Atrox demos until Cradle of Filth’s “Damnation and A Day”. During The Golden Age of this era in DOOM/GOTHIC/DOOM-DEATH/SYMPHONIC AVANT-GARDE METAL.
Madder Mortem unleashed on Planet Metal one of the GREATEST albums of all-time. On October 21st, 2002 Madder Mortem “Deadlands”.
Don’t forget in 2002 there were tons of excellent print editions fanZines, still around, and I remember Madder Mortem getting excellent reviews back then on the most influential publication to this publication, it was called Ill-Literature, back then. Ill-Literature specialized called True Norwegian Gothic Metal, and Avant-Garde Metal. Ill-Literature covered almost every Norwegian rock/avant-garde/gothic/symphonic metal release back then, one day I opened the front cover and this magazine was based in New York, New York and Los Angeles, California.
Madder Mortem is a trusted/respected/adored metal arist since their inception in 1997, and I know this as a lifelong metal fan starting with heavy metal in 1978. If your oblivious as to why they are covered in the pages in KICK*ASS*METAL webZine, It is because during the fanZine and printed editions from the more popular glossy metal publications. Always got it right that Madder Mortem is one of the Greatest Bands of all-time.
Keep in mind when doing a top 100 albums of all-time list for the category that they are in. All 6 albums in the bands back catalogue are in the top 100. My personal favorites are “Deadlands” “Eight Ways” and “Red in Tooth and Claw”
With 2016 being one of the Greatest years in Heavy Metal since 1983. There are excellent releases by Evig Natt, Leaves’ Eyes, Sirenia, Madder Mortem and tons of others see our MetalstorM updates for the top 100 albums of 2016.
Madder Mortem “Red in Tooth and Claw” is a TOP 100 HEAVY METAL album of the year in 2016, and when I do our top 100 albums of the decade/ 21st century/ all-time. Expect to see the complete Madder Mortem discography, on the greatest of all-time list. Lifelong Metal fans who listen to this kind of music, add this TIMELESS MASTERPIECE to your collection. Those new to heavy metal, I recommend starting with the new albums first and work your way backwards. “Red in Tooth and Claw”, “Eight Ways”, “Deiderata”, “Deadlands”, “All Flesh Is Grass”, “Mercury”.
World-Class Vocalist Agnete Kirkevaag is a KICK*ASS*METAL Hall of Fame World-Class Vocalist, and since she has 6 essential/foundational/fundamental albums for a sersious heavy metal record collection. Agenete Kirkevaag is a legend in 2 Centuriest the 20th and 21st, very few World-Class Vocalist have achieved this feat.
I learned back in 1985 to listen to an album for 21 days @ least 8 to 12 hours a day before writing album reviews. Because I always love to apprecatied the articture of the song-wrting and the mastery of song-writing dynamics.
When it comes to one-of-a-kind true originals. Madder Mortem is the real deal, and the Gold Standard in heavy music in this genre and all genres. And the definition of the GOLD STANDARD is the best, most reliable, or most prestigious thing of its type.
Madder Mortem “Red in Tooth and Claw” is a albums that will get heavy rotations on my stereo for years, and decade to come, as a life-long fan since the debut album, I am proud to say that this album is a highlight in a highly competitive genre which is expericening one of my favorite years since the golden age vintage era of 1983. Let’s not forget the Metallica KILL/RIDE Boxsets were unleashed on Planet Metal in June 2016!!!!
Anyhow Madder Mortem has forever indelible mark on this history of heavy metal, and when the next history book on heavy metal is written. I will be looking for the chapter on Madder Mortem.
Six back to back to back to back to back to back TIMELESS MASTERPIECE albums. And 1997 until….. as one of the Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of all-time with in their sub-genre/genre, in which they are true legends and masters of metal!!!
A KICK*ASS*METAL heavy metal hall of fame artist without a doubt !!!!!!!!!!!!

The region of Hedmark, in the eastern part of southern Norway, is a land of lakes and fields and dark fir forests, of golden, tranquil summers and snowy, silent winters. This landscape breeds stubborn, earthborn people. To an outsider, they may seem docile, but beneath the surface there’s a will and a strength of heart that’s just as unmovable as the hills. They will not show off, will not protest, but they will simply put their heads down and do exactly what they wanted to, in their own time and their own way.
This is the soil from which Madder Mortem springs. Both band and members are born and raised in Hedmark, and the view from their rehearsal room is not concrete and streets, but fields and trees set against a quiet lake. There’s nothing urban about Madder Mortem. Just like the land it stems from, the music is organic and earthy. It resounds with the sweat of hard work, and with the tongue-in-cheek view of life of those who know who they are and where they come from. It’s caressing, it’s chilling, it’s outrageously cheeky and dead serious. It’s groovy, it’s melodic, it’s clever and it’s open-hearted, but most of all, it’s music made for music’s sake.
Madder Mortem started out in 1997, and “Eight Ways” is their fifth album, following “Mercury” (1999), “All Flesh Is Grass” (2001), “Deadlands” (2003) and “Desiderata” (2006). They’ve done two European tours, with Opeth in 2003 and with Tristania in 2001, and festivals such as Brutal Assault in Czech Republic, Popkomm Berlin in Germany, Yuletide Metal Meeting in Northern Ireland, Conmusic in Mexico, and the Norwegian festivals Inferno, Southern Discomfort and Quart, among others.

“Eight Ways” was recorded out in the calm of the countryside during the summer and fall of 2008. The album was recorded, produced and mixed by Madder guitarist BP M. Kirkevaag, mastered at Maor Appelbaum Mastering(The Mission, Samael, Stephen O´Malley). The 12 songs are unmistakably Madder Mortem, travelling through a wide array of musical landscapes. You will detect traces of tango and shuffle beats, death metal riffing or folk music tonalities, but the main focus is as always the song. The soundscape is meticulously textured, allowing room for both the grand gestures and the minute details.
