LINKED PROJECTS

ISOBEL

Sonja’s side project with Nerine Dorman was originally known as A MURDER, but after careful consideration they decided to change it to ISOBEL – do swing by and like their new page for updates and more: www.facebook.com/Isobelproject

Recording is currently underway.

F8

20 years ago (in 1997) Paul bought a bass guitar while in Europe with his band V.O.D – Voice Of Destruction, and kicked it off with his anything-goes solo project F8 (‘fate’), however, no guitars are allowed in this genre-defying trip.  This resulted in 5 eclectic albums recorded over the years (from smooth and calm to subversive, experimental and extreme), but never these got released(!) For the 20th anniversary, all of these recordings are now available to the public for the first time.

Terminatryx 15th Anniversary Video Retrospective Part 2:
SIEK + SAT (Sick + Tired), from the 2008 self-titled debut album.
This flaming video for the first Afrikaans Terminatryx song features undead make-up FX by Clinton Aiden Smith and Daleen Badenhorst of CosmesisStudio. (Sadly the SD video format used at that time diminishes the great detail of their excellent make-up).

BIOGRAPHY

In 2002 Paul & Sonja kicked against the barrage of pandering radio-pop, commercial love songs and second rate American Hip-Hop imitations in their native country of South Africa, by creating TERMINATRYX – blending their love of hard- and electronic music, with that of the moods created by Sci-Fi / Horror / Extreme movies, perceptions of the world around them, and a touch of sexually charged danger to initialize their own dark edged Industrial-Rock movement, something of which there is a short supply in this beautiful, sunny country with a dark and bloody history.

In the early stages they slowly cultivated and sculpted their sound, becoming one of the most unique bands on the South African scene.
Their acclaimed debut album was followed by their “Terminatryx / Nosferatu” DVD which also contained the full, classic 1921 NOSFERATU vampire movie, but with their brand new, original soundtrack.
This soundtrack project (with collaborators Sean, Simon and Matthijs) was dubbed The Makabra Ensemble, and have written & performed many live soundtracks to silent classics, in addition to Nosferatu – Haxan, Maciste In Hell, Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, Phantom Of The Opera. Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

Released in December 2011, “Remyx v1.0”: the ambitious and genre-bending full remixed version of the debut album – with remixers including Martin Degville from Sigue Sigue Sputnik, with Lloyd Price (UK), Industriezone (Austria), Sheep On Drugs (UK), The Awakening, (USA / RSA), Modern-e-Quartet (Greece), and from South Africa: Battery 9, Mr Sakitumi, Axxon, NuL, iRONic, Jekyll & Hyde. The collection will also include a Terminatryx acoustic rendition, a cover version of Animotion’s classic ’80s song Obsession, and a track from the Terminatryx-driven live movie soundtrack project The Makabra Ensemble.

2014 saw the releae of the much anticipated new album “Shadow” (co-produced by Paul Blom & Theo Crous) – propelling the band into a new realm, both sonically and with their songwriting.

TERMINATRYX – a new breed of South African music.
(pronounced: “Terminaytricks”) In 2002 Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg protested against the barrage of pandering radio-pop, commercial love songs and second rate American Hip-Hop imitations in their native country of South Africa, by creating TERMINATRYX – blending their eclectic love of hard- and electronic music, with hints of moods created by Sci-Fi / Horror / Extreme movies, perceptions of the world around them, and a touch of sexually charged danger to initialize their own dark edged Industrial-Rock movement, something of which there is a short supply in this beautiful, sunny country with a dark and bloody history. Since then they have slowly cultivated and sculpted their sound, systematically shaping these creations, encapsulating the fusion-, symbiosis- and corruption of man & technology, illustrating and supplementing it with a wide range of moods and subjects, from socio-political & protest grievances, the media & consumerism, to alien visitation, an alternative to the traditional love song, a critical tirade in one of their local languages Afrikaans, biological- and digital infection, and impacting instrumentals. A strong sense of individuality, free speech, and free choice filters throughout. Reacting on the state of the world (and beyond), there is no mincing of words.

Categorization has been difficult with the band’s dark blend of female-fronted, electronically infused Industrial Metal-scapes, but in addition there are many musical elements subtly filtering through across the diverse songs, from Alternative- and Gothic flavours, to Electronic-, Punk- & Dark Wave- hints.

With Sonja on lead vocals, the other key component of the TERMINATRYX collective is Paul, also member of South Africa’s most influential Metal band V.O.D – VOICE OF DESTRUCTION, and former drummer of SA Music Award winners K.O.B.U.S. Besides songwriting, Paul also handles all musical and production aspects from programming, guitars and bass, to keyboards and backing vocals.

For live performances TERMINATRYX is joined on stage by drummer Ronnie Belcher (Gramlich), and guitarist Patrick Davidson (Mind Assault).

In addition, Sonja and Paul are also involved in video production, and are the creators and directors of the South African HORRORFEST Film Festival, and each year as THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE create an original soundtrack for a classic silent horror film, performing it live to the screen (incl. Nosferatu, The Cabinet Dr. Caligari, Häxan, and Maciste In Hell).
They also produce their own music videos.

Releases incl. the self-titled debut album, its full remixed version (“Remyx v 1.0”), the Nosferatu DVD (feat. music videos, a short film, and the full silent vampire classic film Nosferatu with the band’s new original soundtrack.

It is time for this unique force to burst from its South African chains and infiltrate the rest of this rotten peach of a planet.
