THIS IS OBVIOUSLY THE DEATH METALage, THE GOTHIC METAL age, and the AVANT GARDE METAL AGE OF HEAVY METAL WELL since this album was released on November 2nd 2017. This specific album caused a lot of publications and webZines….this one. Ill-Literature for sure, as well as AVANT-GARDE METAL webZine and print edtions…the last time this album was repressed was in 1999 During the Golden Age of Gothic Metal, which is from January 1st, 1993 to June 24th, 2003. Basically which is the first demo of The 3rd and the Mortal to the heaviest and greatest heavy metal album ever unleashed on Planet Metal on a Major Label which is Cradle of Filth “Damnation and a Day”. Since I started with Heavy Metal in the Summer of 1978 and this album was unleashed on Planet Metal on November 2nd, 1987. So before this album Heavy Metal bands only had innovation in small increments. Heavier, faster, with better riffs, with more virtuosity and superior song-writing, the zeitgeist of the era before this album was unleashed on Planet Metal was more sharp, effective and deadly RIFFING….the events leading up to this album was the same as what Metallica went through in 1990 leading up to “The Black Album”…will not state this historic fact here. If you ever see me in public I will tell you then.
So what did I listen to as a metal fan 10 years before this album….Hair Metal/Glam Metal and Thrash Metal went hand-in-hand. New Wave Puck Rock and New Wave of British Heavy Metal went hand in had. Power Metal and Hardcore Punk Metal went hand in hand. Classical Music and Horror Movie Music always went hand in hand…just 3 years after this album was Unleashed on Planet Metal. The Death Metal-age of Heavy Metal happened. This album is the beginning of Doom/Death Metal, Gothic Metal, and AvantGarde Metal. AvantGarde is not a genre, it is a achievement of being at the upper echelon of THE GOLD STANDARD….The Decade before this album was released was THE GOLDEN AGE OF HEAVY METAL which was from August 1st, 1981 to October 31st, 1986….this is the album, the was the new start of a GOLDEN AGE IN HEAVY METAL…the GOTHIC METAL-age and the AVANTGARDE-METAL age….I used 2 reviews from the AVANTGARDE METAL webZine and Print Edtions, here…..Well because that publication is the Greatest Music Publication of all-time, at the upper-echelon of music journalism only peer that publication had was James L. McHard —THE FUTURE OF MODERN MUSIC….!!!! I DO have to say, I obtained all world-wide pressings of this album in LP, cassette, and CD before the strange and bizarre album review from Metal Forces Dave Reynolds was published, and lets just say that review went down in history as the most incorrect and fucked up album review ever written next to Jake “The Flake” Boris, 0 out of 100 album review on a “metal archives” of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” . I have a 100 copies of Celtic Frost “Into The Pandemonium” in my record collection, and I consider Dave Reynold’s FUCKED-UP album review, as a attempted theft of $1500 from me and my album collection….Listening to dumb-fucker like Dave Reyonlds is not differnent than getting robbed, he tried to rip-off me, by trying to act cool, and act more hip than the next rager…but luckily Metal Forces was a 2nd-tier publication, and no one took them seriously….. I am just glad, i never took that morons/assFUCKINGhole advice. And already had 9 copies of this album in my collection before the Metal Forces Magazine hit my mailbox and work desk. It was for a good laugh, that the owner was stupid enough to let that slip through the quality control department….! I think I picked up cat-poop with that page or i burnt it and sent it back to them fuckers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Having nothing better to do during a five hour lunch break from school, I thought I could give a shot at reviewing one of the most irreviewable albums ever. Into The Pandemonium. 20 years after its conception, it still stands as the creative apex of one of the most important extreme metal bands ever. After vomiting forth the darkest metal album of the eighties – To Mega Therion, the best pre-Oslo black metal album – Martin Eric Ain returned to the Frost, and together with Tom G. Warrior and Reed St. Mark they decided to push the boundaries as far as possible. All Celtic Frost releases seem to have sprung out of the deepest anguish and personal pain, as does Into The Pandemonium, which must have been a terrible nuisance to create; it is not surprising that it back lashed into whatever you would call Cold Lake some years later.

Anyhow, Into The Pandemonium is still a major fuck off to the suffocating genre conventions metal is still plagued by, even though the efforts here from our favourite Swiss export opened up many paths for the decades to follow. Opening an album with a cover is not kosher, and the choice of an upbeat new wave song about being lost in Mexico would still today be questioned and frowned upon, so I suspect many metalheads have reacted quite negative back in these days. “Mesmerized” is a deep red suggestive little thing, haunting with its decadence and Tom’s trademark moan. If you ask me, I would say that this is where gothic metal began, another genre’s blood on their hands. The rather slow moving fashion is continued by the two “Jade Serpent” songs, with their dark melancholy infused with Oriental mysticism evoking images of lush decadent gardens filled with incense. Even though songs like these were the foundation of avantgardistic metal, I cannot think of any works similar to this masterpiece, despite these two decades. The approach – yes, perhaps, but not the specific sounds. Celtic Frost are the H.P. Lovecraft of metal.

Another always very important part of Celtic Frost was (and is still, actually) the use of art music. The horn and timpani arrangements of To Mega Therion are here blooming out into all their majesty; from the lamenting ”Sorrows Of The Moon” and its French counterpart, to the ominous string quartet modernism of the mighty ”Rex Irae”. I cannot think of any metal band using classical music in this manner before Frost did, and very few since. Tom’s lyrics continue in tradition of Celtic Frost – sorrow-filled poetic visions of majesty, corruption, vanity and pride, bringing doom and loss of life and power; the fall of everything, all set in a fantastic suggestive environment that could be as much about Dune as Sodom and Gomorrah. If To Mega Therion is silver and steel, then Into The Pandemonium is marble and sand. Even though a song like ”Inner Sanctum” showed very well that they still could pump out bludgeoning thrash metal, the lyrics are still partly taken from a poem by Emily Brontë – a proof why Celtic Frost still in my opinion eclipse all competition. They dared being intellectual, even pretentious, transcending the simplicity of beer and denim. They tried “to be different, to be something new” (Thomas G. Fischer, 1986), for “there are more feelings to express than just aggression and destruction” (Martin Eric Ain, 1987). These quotes sum up what Into The Pandemonium is about, and it is for this reason Kerrang! described it as “the most avant-garde album that will ever be released [sic]” which is true, at least in a metal context, seeing what came before it. This is the mother of all avant-garde metal (including early Voïvod!).

Into The Pandemonium might not be the best and most consistent of Celtic Frosts work – To Mega Therion usurped that jewel throne aeons ago – but for the sake (which is not mere) of its aspirations, its creativity, its daring progress, it deserves a place in the heart and record collection of everyone, as well as a 66 metre tall golden statue of the power trio of all power trios; our antediluvian gods and celestial dominators, Celtic Frost. What does he say? UH!”

Celtic Frost were able to convey brash thrash stylings to perfection on two of their previous outings Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion, the latter of which hinted at the beginnings of interesting approaches that would be elevated to full blown experimentalism with the advent of this album. They would shed some of their pure metal thoughts on the album too with the introduction of such delights as “I Won’t Dance”, which features a fun rock vibe, but enough of a heavy approach to be suitable for the album. Similarly, the remainder of Into the Pandemonium goes through a variety of metal landscapes to create a different feel than what we were used to in their earliest offerings of harsh metal delight.

Tom G. Warrior must utilize his voice more greatly as he needs to become operatic at times to suit the background music at hand. Altogether, the album comes at a nice point in their discography where they show the need to add some experimentation to their normal formulas to craft an ingenious work. The tracks don’t carry the pure metal delight of Jewel Throne, for example, but we can see songs like “Mesmerized” and “Rex Irae (Requiem Overture)” entertaining to a higher plane of thought with more adventurous vocals as well. Furthermore, we can sense the presence of a female vocalist on the album at times to bring a greater dimension to their sound.

Overall, Into the Pandemonium brings an excellent experimental edge to Celtic Frost‘s sound and though some may long for their pure metal style, the variety is a strong point to adding charisma to such an excellent discography as theirs.

….”Swansong isn’t always singing. Sometimes it’s a weak sigh of one who wished to reach the end crowned with olive leaves, and its strength is not heard. Sometimes it’s a mighty shout into fathomless void which the artist leaves after his departure, the very same dark cave that only a few selected ones can light. Facing this knowledge, the artist clears the stage and in the background the winds are howling – “let go of the leaving” and scatter the ashes of a gloomy farewell.
This shout is embodied in the last album of the best and most important black-metal band ever, Emperor. As a band that nourished courage and honesty within its music, Emperor did not hesitate to announce breaking-up after a decade. In a scene that recycles itself to death, where other bands are still struggling to pull their wagon and to extort last creativity sparks into an outcome that sheds black stains upon their repertoire and leaves a foul taste to their loyal audience, Emperor stands out as the ultimate lighthouse. Lending a comparison from another great band, this album is the “Strangeways, here we come” of the metal scene.
The uncompromised artistic integrity characterizing the band led into a last and pure burst of creation in the very deep meaning. A whole bleeding creation delivered as a concept album describing the last journey of Prometheus, the man of fire.

It is him – the one who knows before, the silent prophet, the man of fire. The one chosen to carry the swansong. Emperor was chosen to tell its fall. The symbiosis is perfect. The band that carries the fire in the instruments, voices and above all, in stomachs, gives a new mouth to the man that is compassion, pride and love. The man who fights for human freedom marches its final way and the listener can only shrink. Emperor created for him, for us, a world of ice and flames, natural as the sky above and earth underneath, like the bitter truth and the bitten lips. The album’s cover is grey and the booklet too, ornamented with bits of black and white. This is the message, this is the world and the fire colors have no place in it.

Musically, the album is an upgrading of Emperor’s previous “IX Equilibrium”, which stood for intelligent tight music, rich in influences that is rare to find within the genre of progressive with death-metal, paper-thin electronic flickering opposite of classical orchestration moments, all sewed by Ihsahn. In the “Prometheus” effort the complexity gathers more depth, but not over the emotions account, dripping from every note. It seems like an evasive definition such as ‘progressive black-metal’ would not do well with the album, although it somehow catches its musical structures. The ornament of the basic metallic guitar cloak is quite ethereal. It winks at ambient directions and sometimes at blatant electronic. This gives the mystical shades from the days of the beloved Norwegian yarn. The symphonic neo-classical touches are substantial as well, represented by barrages of violins along with crawling blackish riffs or whining cello upon ambience keyboards platform. The guitar parts are inspirable and it’s truly a pleasure listening to and behold that it’s possible to renew even in the archaic metal scene.

The opening track, “The Eruption” starts with a silent pipe-organ and within seconds drives into a storm that is death-metal planted in black-metal aesthetics. The song, like the others, is ever-evolved – here a complex progressive riff is presented and there blinks a gentle melody. Never silent. Vocals-wise, Ihsahn is at its best – the operatic attitude, showcased since glorified “Anthems to the welkin at dusk” days, stands here with all its beauty and strength. His clean voice is deep and lucid, steady yet becomes rounded in corners. He is Prometheus himself.
None of the songs fails to thrive, as suitable from a concept album which keeps a unified level of its phases. Nevertheless, two songs are the weeping heart of the album: the seven-minuet epos “The tongue of fire” is stunning with its prickly guitar opening, poured into beautifully breaking chorus with lachrymatory elegy: “The soul is never silent, but wordless”. The very same soul is silent in the keyboards part, enchanting like heavenly bells, with whispering drumming and blunt distortion. After that comes a touching combination between violins and a choppy, furious riff that represents Emperor perfectly as the genre founders. With a strike of a finger they bury it all. The enormous passion taking place in the song, the extential need in fire and its fleeing into grey clouds are driving Prometheus like a madman.
“In the wordless chamber” is the sound of cessation. The soul, locked in the metaphorical cellar, weeps the ills of the world, cries the lack of hope, through low and gurgled singing, based on another death-metal riff and French horn blows. Even though the symphonic arrangement is pushed to the background one cannot ignore its beauty. Here as well, the song breaks into a quiet part, yet again this weak violin, searching its way through the darkness and exploding into thick riffs, singing of desperation and disappointment itself. Prometheus tries to get out of this hell-hole.

In this album and in contrast to the myth, Prometheus isn’t immortal. In the closing song and most vicious one “Thorns on my grave” he’s wrapped in plastic coil and in harsh riffs, brought into the heart of the soil, as he asks the most barbed thorns will bloom from his tombstone, as his body will remain deep under, for he holds every pain and every death he cannot be released from. Emperor has those two gifts in their palm and now, the album ends with great silence.
The greatness of this album is not only the magnificent musical display that once more made anew the bleak black-metal rather than its essence. Prometheus is not walking among the gods. He is walking among us and also in this modern age there’s a place for this prophecies. This is the poetic work of Ihsahn, who stroke once again the peak and turned Prometheus into one of us. This is nothing but sharp and heart-stabbing poetry, from the fire creator and its deliverer, and it burns the listener’s soul as he burns with Prometheus. His stomach turns over, for he knows or not, that the fire lies deep within, always burning, always scorching. Most of the time it won’t find solace and it will annihilate its environment just like this album does….”
