FRONT-RUNNER BEST COVERS VERSION ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Since February 24th, 1994 this has always been a GOTHIC METAL-age/ DEATH METAL-age/ AVANT-GARDE METAL-age publication, but my main influence in my college years was the GODLY ill-literautre Magazine which ran from 1988 to 2003, and pretty much the print media age was over for the more commerical metal publications, there are specialized press in each metal sub-genre that thrive even to this day. ill-literature was the 1st metal publication, to cover any artist as long as they were original, kick ass, and authentic. Authenticity is the aspect in music in which bands become transcended, and the thing were bands make SUPREME IMMORTAL ART OF THE HIGHEST ORDER, instead of entertainment.
For those not up on current hard rock and heavy metal history, the Haxans won the 2018 Gothic Album of Year Winner, that is relevant here because our first speciality as a specialized press in, will have to say it again, Since February 24th, 1994 KICK ASS METAL has always been a GOTHIC METAL-age/ DEATH METAL-age/ AVANT-GARDE METAL-age publication, but my main influence in my college years was the GODLY ill-literature Magazine which ran from 1988 to 2003, which specialized in Gothic Metal, Death Metal, Avant-Garde Metal, but went all in on Alternative Metal, like no other.
As a heavy metal fan since 1978, i became a fan of the covers album via Metallica with Creeping Death Garage Days EP in November of 1984, and the Garage Days Revisited in the Summer of 1987. So i am very open-minded about these kind of releases.
The packing of the New Years Day “Diary of A Creep” is bare-bones, exactly like a promo sleeve album, that i used to get back when the vinyl era changed over to the CD age in 1988 for some and in 1990 for most. I bought 2 copies of this, for now initially, will get more later, because it was sold a Maxi-Single to a Extended Play Price. The music society pages have this release unleashed on Planet Metal back a couple of months ago, maybe for digital release, since this was one of the most anticipated releases in hard rock/ heavy metal of 2018, this was going to be a 1st day purchase, so the official CD release date is February 23rd, 2018, for the actual CD.
I love this album so much i will have to get in a better pressing, maybe a import where this is released with CD booklet and a CD layout. I would love to see liner notes about this release. So will have to keep working on this and will let you know what happens with this release. This recording is so good in the future I hope it is added as a second disc, when “Malevolence” ever gets a re-press, re-edition. That is how good this extended play release is !!!!!!!!!!
The track-listing is
Disgust Me
Bizarre Love Triangle
Fucking Hostile
Crawling
Only Happy When it Rains featuring World-Class Vocalist Lzzy Hale
Don’t Speak
While the whole EP is perfect in every way, there is a sweet spot on this the four songs of “Fucking Hostile”, “Crawling” “Only Happy When it Rains” with Lzzy Hale as a guest vocalist !!!!!!!!!!! and “Don’t Speak”
Fucking Hostile is the all-time classic from Groove Metal pioneers and Nü-METAL GODFATHERS, Pantera. As a Nü-METAL fanatic insane metal maniac, Pantera really pulled a way from the generic thrash scrap metal pack, by making METAL even heavier, and more power soaked than even 99.9 of most DEATH METAL, of it day and of all-time. But what I love about this version, with the added melody, on the vocal lines, this version will have you grabbing for your copies of Pantera “POWER METAL” in no time!!!
You have to get Pantera “POWER METAL” on cassette, or vinyl since Metal Magic Records only pressed it on CD in a limited run of 2,000 COPIES, and myself I have 3 of them, and 2 copies of a December 1988 simulcast recording where half of the song listing is from Power Metal and half of the song listing is from the then upcoming Cowboys From Hell!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crawling is up next and of course every Alternative Rock and Alternative Metal fan knows it is the Linkin Park all-time classic from one of the most original bands of all-time. I really loved all the artistry of Linkin Park, and this was a real treat for all the Linkin Park/New Years Day true fans. And really felt this song did the original justice, while making it there own.
Only Happy When It Rains is a cover version from the legendary Garbage featuring World-Class Vocalist Shirley Manson, and this version features a guest vocal spot from one of the grestest hard rocker/ heavy metal vocalist of all-time in Lzzy Hale, and while the original is awesome and powerful, this version also is bad ass and kick ass in its own right !!!!!
Don’t Speak is from the highly influential, Gwen Stefani who is a true inspiration on a few artist featured in these pages, No Dobut is a band always in heavy metal play list rotation alongside artist such as Berlin with Terri Nunn, as well as artist such as the usual Metal Blade, Combat, Megaforce, Shrapnel Records top-tier artist. Think the October 31st 1982 to October 31st 1986-era!!!!
Metallica later in the year will be unleashing the 1987 “The $5.98 EP” on Blackend Records, so between heavy rotations of that releases, will be heavy rotation of New Years Day “Diary of A Creep” and the FUCKING ESSENTIAL volumes 1-3 of Halestorm ReAniMate
Below is a article from Alternative Press, and is here for posterity !!!!
New Years Day are kicking off the new year with a new EP, Diary Of A Creep, chock-full of awesome rock covers. It features a fresh original track, “Disgust Me,” alongside a collection of cover tunes from Linkin Park, Garbage, No Doubt, Pantera and New Order.
We caught up with front-woman Ash Costello to talk about each track on Diary Of A Creep and how each band—and song—helped shape her into the artist she is today.
It was incredibly difficult to narrow this down to five songs we wanted to cover the most. It was very important to me to not only pay tribute to the artists who shaped who I am today, but to share it with all of you.
It’s easy to dismiss where an artist has come from if you have no clue who they worshipped when they were just kids in school, dreaming of being a real musician someday. These are just a few of the songs that helped and shaped me along the way. I am grateful to you for listening, and I hope you enjoy the covers as much as I do.
Pantera, “Fucking Hostile”
When I was in high school, there were different groups of kids. The goth kids. The ska kids. The punk kids. The metal kids. I had ins with all of them. The metal gang was all about the music. Every lunchtime, it was only about listening to each other’s favorite metal songs together at our table in the school quad. The bands we played ranged from Iron Maiden and Megadeth to Slayer and Cradle Of Filth. But one band really did it for me. Fucking Pantera. The guitar riffs. The guitar tone. The songs’ subject matter. The way they looked. Something about it just felt like mine. And above all the other songs, after all this time, “Fucking Hostile” still makes every single one of my “before I hit the stage” playlists. It has shaped a lot of my musical songwriting preferences, and it’s what I base a lot of New Years Day’s music on.
RIP Dimebag.
Linkin Park, “Crawling”
It’s the perfect song. There, I said it. In nine out of 10 songwriting sessions, I use this song as an example. The lyrics say so much. They describe every way I feel by saying very, very little. It taught me that I can speak novels about what’s going on inside my head, and my heart, without saying anything at all.
It was hard to narrow down the five songs I wanted to cover because through the years, the ebb and flow of my musical taste changed and twisted so much. But I wanted to do this for Chester. I am still in shock over what he may have been going through internally. I relate to it more than I’d like to say, and I really felt strongly about singing the words he sang.
Garbage, “Only Happy When It Rains”
To be honest, I was not a fan of many female singers growing up. I never liked the pop stars. I appreciated their talent and their work. But the female had to have some very specific requirements for me to fangirl over them, I realized once I became a frontwoman myself. I liked women who weren’t afraid. They pushed the limits. They made you think. They were feminine, but ass-kicking. They were dark, but not too dark. Shirley Manson is perfect. The music represented me. Queer, No. 1 crush, just flawless, but “Only Happy When It Rains” was my motherfucking anthem. I wouldn’t be the artist I am today had I not studied Garbage albums in middle school.
No Doubt, “Don’t Speak”
No Doubt are it for me. No Doubt were my first love. The first time I was a fan of anything or anybody. Gwen was my ultimate hero. I dressed like her in middle school. I wore the creepers with the Dickies. I had the bangs, the red lipstick and the crop tops. I studied her mannerisms and stage moves. The way she was vulnerable onstage, but let you know she was the queen bitch in charge. I would pretend to be the rock star in a band while lip-syncing to all of Tragic Kingdom. She grew up around the corner from me. Her mom and my mom would run into each other at the supermarket, and we attended the same junior high and high school. Her sweetness and her ability to take charge. How she was just a normal and simple girl yet extraordinary. I had a No Doubt cover band in high school, and we played parties and coffee shops. I was the ultimate fangirl. I saw No Doubt play in 1995, and I knew I wanted to be just like Gwen. “Just A Girl” was my first pick, but it seemed too obvious. “Don’t Speak” can still make me cry, so it was a no-brainer.
New Order, “Bizarre Love Triangle”
My mom was a single, working mother, so my grandma, a practicing Wiccan, and her two sons, who were total Robert Smith-looking ’80s goths, would babysit me. They would dress me in black, put black lipstick on me and we’d have dance parties in the living room to their favorite new wave songs. This one was always my absolute favorite. You can’t not dance to it. And since NYD have already covered a Depeche Mode song, New Order seems like the next obvious move.

We support and love each other, and we are representing our genre. This lineup is a beautiful display of what it means to be a strong female example for rock fans everywhere.”
IN THIS MOMENT‘s frontwoman Maria Brink echoed the sentiment, saying: “I am very excited about being a part of such an empowering, divine, female-fronted tour. It is very rare in rock music to have a movement like this and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Lzzy and I are already discussing the possibility of more tours like this in the future. Let the Amazons rise!”
NEW YEARS DAY frontwoman Ash Costello adds: “I am beyond thrilled to be sharing the stage with such strong women. Having toured with both HALESTORM and IN THIS MOMENTalready, they are such powerful forces, it’s just incredible to be a part of every night. I’m very excited for an all female fronted tour, because in all my years of touring, this is the very first time I’ll have been a part of one. I can’t wait to walk on stage and feel the support of a crowd that is there to witness women of rock slay for an entire evening. What an evening it will be! You won’t want to miss this tour, I can promise you that.”

Ah. Well… I attended Julliard… I’m a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I’ve seen the EXORCIST ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT… NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU’RE TALKING TO A DEAD GIRL… NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK?!?
This is the lifestyle I love.

New Years Day:
Imagine if Dexter Morgan with side kick Eric Northman, hosted a late late late night talk show in a haunted mansion deep within the enchanted cemetery, then NEW YEARS DAY would most assuredly be their house band with warm blood-spattered bottles of True Blood offered in the “red room” for the visiting “undead”.
If Gerard Way and Haley Williams had a demon baby girl, who sang youthful hook-laden dark-rock with tongue-in-cheek macabre lyrics, dark molten ghoulishness and topped mischievousness.
