FRONT-RUNNER BEST COVERS VERSION ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Since February 24th, 1994 this has always been a GOTHIC METAL-age/ DEATH METAL-age/ AVANT-GARDE METAL-age publication, but my main influence in my college years was the GODLY ill-literautre Magazine which ran from 1988 to 2003, and pretty much the print media age was over for the more commerical metal publications, there are specialized press in each metal sub-genre that thrive even to this day.  ill-literature was the 1st metal publication, to cover any artist as long as they were original, kick ass, and authentic. Authenticity is the aspect in music in which bands become transcended, and the thing were bands make SUPREME IMMORTAL ART OF THE HIGHEST ORDER, instead of entertainment.

For those not up on current hard rock and heavy metal history, the Haxans won the 2018 Gothic Album of Year Winner, that is relevant here because our first speciality as a specialized press in, will have to say it again, Since February 24th, 1994 KICK ASS METAL has always been a GOTHIC METAL-age/ DEATH METAL-age/ AVANT-GARDE METAL-age publication, but my main influence in my college years was the GODLY ill-literature Magazine which ran from 1988 to 2003, which specialized in Gothic Metal, Death Metal, Avant-Garde Metal, but went all in on Alternative Metal, like no other.

As a heavy metal fan since 1978, i became a fan of the covers album via Metallica with Creeping Death Garage Days EP in November of 1984, and the Garage Days Revisited in the Summer of 1987. So i am very open-minded about these kind of releases.

The packing of the New Years Day “Diary of A Creep” is bare-bones, exactly like a promo sleeve album, that i used to get back when the vinyl era changed over to the CD age in 1988 for some and in 1990 for most. I bought 2 copies of this, for now initially, will get more later, because it was sold a Maxi-Single to a Extended Play Price.  The music society pages have this release unleashed on Planet Metal back a couple of months ago, maybe for digital release, since this was one of the most anticipated releases in hard rock/ heavy metal of 2018, this was going to be a 1st day purchase, so the official CD release date is February 23rd, 2018, for the actual CD.

I love this album so much i will have to get in a better pressing, maybe a import where this is released with CD booklet and a CD layout. I would love to see liner notes about this release. So will have to keep working on this and will let you know what happens with this release. This recording is so good in the future I hope it is added as a second disc, when “Malevolence” ever gets a re-press, re-edition. That is how good this extended play release is !!!!!!!!!!

The track-listing is

Disgust Me

Bizarre Love Triangle

Fucking Hostile

Crawling

Only Happy When it Rains featuring World-Class Vocalist Lzzy Hale

Don’t Speak

While the whole EP is perfect in every way, there is a sweet spot on this the four songs of “Fucking Hostile”, “Crawling” “Only Happy When it Rains” with Lzzy Hale as a guest vocalist !!!!!!!!!!! and “Don’t Speak”

Fucking Hostile is the all-time classic from Groove Metal pioneers and  Nü-METAL GODFATHERS, Pantera. As a  Nü-METAL fanatic insane metal maniac, Pantera really pulled a way from the generic thrash scrap metal pack, by making METAL even heavier, and more power soaked than even 99.9 of most DEATH METAL, of it day and of all-time. But what I love about this version, with the added melody, on the vocal lines, this version will have you grabbing for your copies of Pantera “POWER METAL” in no time!!!

You have to get Pantera “POWER METAL” on cassette, or vinyl since Metal Magic Records only pressed it on CD in a limited run of 2,000 COPIES, and myself I have 3 of them, and 2 copies of a December 1988 simulcast recording where half of the song listing is from Power Metal and half of the song listing is from the then upcoming Cowboys From Hell!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crawling is up next and of course every Alternative Rock and Alternative Metal fan knows it is the Linkin Park all-time classic from one of the most original bands of all-time. I really loved all the artistry of Linkin Park, and this was a real treat for all the Linkin Park/New Years Day true fans. And really felt this song did the original justice, while making it there own.

Only Happy When It Rains is a cover version from the legendary Garbage featuring World-Class Vocalist Shirley Manson, and this version features a guest vocal spot from one of the grestest hard rocker/ heavy metal vocalist of all-time in Lzzy Hale, and while the original is awesome and powerful, this version also is bad ass and kick ass in its own right !!!!!

Don’t Speak is from the highly influential, Gwen Stefani who is a true inspiration on a few artist featured in these pages, No Dobut is a band always in heavy metal play list rotation alongside artist such as Berlin with Terri Nunn, as well as artist such as the usual Metal Blade, Combat, Megaforce, Shrapnel Records top-tier artist. Think the October 31st 1982 to October 31st 1986-era!!!!

Metallica later in the year will be unleashing the 1987 “The $5.98 EP” on Blackend Records, so between heavy rotations of that releases, will be heavy rotation of New Years Day “Diary of A Creep” and the FUCKING ESSENTIAL volumes 1-3 of  Halestorm ReAniMate

Below is a article from Alternative Press, and is here for posterity !!!!

New Years Day are kicking off the new year with a new EP, Diary Of A Creep, chock-full of awesome rock covers. It features a fresh original track, “Disgust Me,” alongside a collection of cover tunes from Linkin ParkGarbageNo DoubtPantera and New Order.

We caught up with front-woman Ash Costello to talk about each track on Diary Of A Creep and how each band—and song—helped shape her into the artist she is today.

It was incredibly difficult to narrow this down to five songs we wanted to cover the most. It was very important to me to not only pay tribute to the artists who shaped who I am today, but to share it with all of you.

It’s easy to dismiss where an artist has come from if you have no clue who they worshipped when they were just kids in school, dreaming of being a real musician someday. These are just a few of the songs that helped and shaped me along the way. I am grateful to you for listening, and I hope you enjoy the covers as much as I do.

Pantera, “Fucking Hostile”
When I was in high school, there were different groups of kids. The goth kids. The ska kids. The punk kids. The metal kids. I had ins with all of them. The metal gang was all about the music. Every lunchtime, it was only about listening to each other’s favorite metal songs together at our table in the school quad. The bands we played ranged from Iron Maiden and Megadeth to Slayer and Cradle Of Filth. But one band really did it for me. Fucking Pantera. The guitar riffs. The guitar tone. The songs’ subject matter. The way they looked. Something about it just felt like mine. And above all the other songs, after all this time, “Fucking Hostile” still makes every single one of my “before I hit the stage” playlists. It has shaped a lot of my musical songwriting preferences, and it’s what I base a lot of New Years Day’s music on.

RIP Dimebag.

Linkin Park, “Crawling”
It’s the perfect song. There, I said it. In nine out of 10 songwriting sessions, I use this song as an example. The lyrics say so much. They describe every way I feel by saying very, very little. It taught me that I can speak novels about what’s going on inside my head, and my heart, without saying anything at all.

It was hard to narrow down the five songs I wanted to cover because through the years, the ebb and flow of my musical taste changed and twisted so much. But I wanted to do this for Chester. I am still in shock over what he may have been going through internally. I relate to it more than I’d like to say, and I really felt strongly about singing the words he sang.

Garbage, “Only Happy When It Rains”
To be honest, I was not a fan of many female singers growing up. I never liked the pop stars. I appreciated their talent and their work. But the female had to have some very specific requirements for me to fangirl over them, I realized once I became a frontwoman myself. I liked women who weren’t afraid. They pushed the limits. They made you think. They were feminine, but ass-kicking. They were dark, but not too dark. Shirley Manson is perfect. The music represented me. Queer, No. 1 crush, just flawless, but “Only Happy When It Rains” was my motherfucking anthem. I wouldn’t be the artist I am today had I not studied Garbage albums in middle school.

No Doubt, “Don’t Speak”
No Doubt are it for me. No Doubt were my first love. The first time I was a fan of anything or anybody. Gwen was my ultimate hero. I dressed like her in middle school. I wore the creepers with the Dickies. I had the bangs, the red lipstick and the crop tops. I studied her mannerisms and stage moves. The way she was vulnerable onstage, but let you know she was the queen bitch in charge. I would pretend to be the rock star in a band while lip-syncing to all of Tragic Kingdom. She grew up around the corner from me. Her mom and my mom would run into each other at the supermarket, and we attended the same junior high and high school. Her sweetness and her ability to take charge. How she was just a normal and simple girl yet extraordinary. I had a No Doubt cover band in high school, and we played parties and coffee shops. I was the ultimate fangirl. I saw No Doubt play in 1995, and I knew I wanted to be just like Gwen. “Just A Girl” was my first pick, but it seemed too obvious. “Don’t Speak” can still make me cry, so it was a no-brainer.

New Order, “Bizarre Love Triangle”
My mom was a single, working mother, so my grandma, a practicing Wiccan, and her two sons, who were total Robert Smith-looking ’80s goths, would babysit me. They would dress me in black, put black lipstick on me and we’d have dance parties in the living room to their favorite new wave songs. This one was always my absolute favorite. You can’t not dance to it. And since NYD have already covered a Depeche Mode song, New Order seems like the next obvious move.

Below is from a February 21st, 2018 KICK ASS METAL TOUR NEWS FEATURE

Atlantic recording group HALESTORM have announced details of a milestone North American tour showcasing all female-fronted hard rock outfits. The dates — co-headlined by Roadrunner recording group IN THIS MOMENT — begins April 30 in Houston, Texas and then travels through mid-May. Support throughout the trek comes from special guests NEW YEARS DAYand STITCHED UP HEART.

The tour will include stops at a number of upcoming festivals and state fairs, including Jacksonville, Florida’s Welcome To Rockville (April 27); Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s Fort Rock(April 28); and Charlotte, North Carolina’s Carolina Rebellion (May 5).

“We’ve been wanting to put together a tour like this for a long time,” says HALESTORM‘s Lzzy Hale. “We are a few of the hardest-working women in rock, so the fact that we are all on the same stage every night is something not to be missed! We support and love each other, and we are representing our genre. This lineup is a beautiful display of what it means to be a strong female example for rock fans everywhere.”

IN THIS MOMENT‘s frontwoman Maria Brink echoed the sentiment, saying: “I am very excited about being a part of such an empowering, divine, female-fronted tour. It is very rare in rock music to have a movement like this and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Lzzy and I are already discussing the possibility of more tours like this in the future. Let the Amazons rise!”

NEW YEARS DAY frontwoman Ash Costello adds: “I am beyond thrilled to be sharing the stage with such strong women. Having toured with both HALESTORM and IN THIS MOMENTalready, they are such powerful forces, it’s just incredible to be a part of every night. I’m very excited for an all female fronted tour, because in all my years of touring, this is the very first time I’ll have been a part of one. I can’t wait to walk on stage and feel the support of a crowd that is there to witness women of rock slay for an entire evening. What an evening it will be! You won’t want to miss this tour, I can promise you that.”

“This is our dream lineup,” says STITCHED UP HEART frontwoman Mixi. “Every single band on this bill is a huge inspiration to us and unbelievably talented. We are beyond excited for this run!”

Ah. Well… I attended Julliard… I’m a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I’ve seen the EXORCIST ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT… NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU’RE TALKING TO A DEAD GIRL… NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK?!?

This is the lifestyle I love.

New Years Day:

Imagine if Dexter Morgan with side kick Eric Northman, hosted a late late late night talk show in a haunted mansion deep within the enchanted cemetery, then NEW YEARS DAY would most assuredly be their house band with warm blood-spattered bottles of True Blood offered in the “red room” for the visiting “undead”.

If Gerard Way and Haley Williams had a demon baby girl, who sang youthful hook-laden dark-rock with tongue-in-cheek macabre lyrics, dark molten ghoulishness and topped mischievousness.

GMR Music Group Website

THE HEARD, the new Swedish hard rock/ heavy metal band featuring former CRUCIFIED BARBARA guitarist Klara “Force” Rönnqvist Fors, bassist Ida “Evileye” Stenbacka and drummer Nikki Wicked (a.k.a. Jannicke Lindström) alongside DEATHSTARS bassist Jonas “Skinny Disco” Kangur (on lead guitar) and burlesque performer, model and singer Pepper Potemkin, has released the official lyric video for its first single, “White Lightning”. The song is available on iTunes, Spotify and other digital platforms.

THE HEARD will make its live debut at the Where’s The Music festival in Norrköping, Sweden on February 10.

THE HEARD’s Facebook page describes the group as being about “heavy riffs, misty songs, dark waters and a death supreme.”

THE HEARD Hails from Stockholm, Sweden is

* Klara Force (CRUCIFIED BARBARA) – Guitar

* Ida Evileye (CRUCIFIED BARBARA) – Bass

* Nikki Wicked (CRUCIFIED BARBARA) – Drums

* Jonas “Skinny Disco” Kangur (DEATHSTARS) – Lead Guitar

* Pepper Potemkin – Vocals

CRUCIFIED BARBARA announced its breakup in June 2016, two years after the release of the band’s fourth album, “In The Red”. The group explained at the time that “our lives have parted and we need to move on. The last years have taken its toll on all of us and the joy of playing together got lost somewhere along the way.”

Ida, Klara and Nicki formed The Heard after the break up of their former band Crucified Barbara. The void left a hunger to create new music and when Klara met long time friend Skinny (Deathstars) at a record fair it was obvious he had the same urge. Another friend, burlesque queen Pepper, proved to have a voice to match her vibrant persona so when Ida bumped into Pepper in the subway she asked her to join the cult. So she did and The Heard was a fact.

” We invite you to a creepy island where the characters we sing about lives, in a world where mystique, fantasy and reality meet. The Heard is all about the joy of playing music but the sound is distorted , doomy and dark. See you on the other side!” /The Heard

Abnormality

(Marlborough, Massachusetts)

DEATH METAL GODS AND DEATH METAL LEGENDS

Marlborough, Massachusetts

featuring World-Class Vocalist Mallika Sundrmurthy

“Mechanisms of Omniscience”

TOP 10 HEAVY METAL/DEATH METAL ALBUM OF ALL-TIME

APRIL 29TH, 2016

KICK*ASS*METAL HEAVY METAL HALL OF FAME ALBUM

Collectors Corner feature is where we look at the actual gold standard of actual heavy metal, and compare it to the revisionism of the record reviews on the internet, because most writers for most webzines, never read a heavy metal publication from 1980 to 2003. So what they write compared to the actaul heavy metal press, is no where even close to the truth of how heavy metal history was recorded, so they are going to talk about the first 80,ooo bands in heavy metal history with nothing but wild guessing and hope no one notices that they are full of shit, and will never be the World’s Greatest Death Metal Vocalist or the World’s Greatest Death Metal band of all-time, of course the Greatest Death Metal Vocalist of all-time is Mallika Sundaramurthy, and currently Abnormality has the #1 ranking / rating as the greatest Death Metal band heavy metal community, for over 5 years from now….!!!!!!!!!

Someone at Metal Archives must know this, they own a metal webZine right??? Can any one over there produced the few thousand fanzines, the actual influential ones, of how heavy metal history has been recorded since 1980. Or is it cool just to say fuck it, the internet is new, lets just guess on everything, on other that the fact, none of the metal archives writes have a fucking clue of what they are talking about, i would not be shocked if they decided at metal archives to remove the Black Sabbath page, based on all the nonsense that goes on over there, just reviews by the hundreds of thousands, but it is more than obvious no one over there ever had a top 100 album of any year, and this has to be just the jealousy factor and nothing else…..!!!!

For those new to heavy metal. Heavy Metal has been in a Golden Age of True Metal for going on now for 5 years, and while this publication has March 1st, 2013 as the starting date of this age, but in reality is it’s on May 24th, 2012 when Abnormality “Contaminating the Hive Mind” was unleashed on Planet Metal, featuring the greatest death metal vocalist of the 21st century and since we revoted on this fact, Mallika Sundramurthy has been the greatest DEATH METAL VOCALIST OF ALL-TIME, since May 24th, 2014.

And if the Metal Archives writers were actually paying attention they would have realized in 2016 THE GREATEST THRASH METAL VOCALIST, Fernanda Lira * Nervosa FAME & HEAVY METAL LEGEND  and THE GREATEST DEATH METAL VOCALIST of all-time battled it out for the 2016 HEAVY METAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR. It was a close vote, but we went with Nervosa “Agony”……but keep in mind Abnormality is the band to watch for the album of the year when they unleash upon planet metal their next splatter platter….!!!!!!!!!!!

So just because he wrote his review the day of the day the album was released, it still comes under the revisionism realm of journalism, because not know what the fuck he was writing, they has the strange and bizarre inspiration to give it a 73 out of 100, which is pretty close (sarcasm), how in the fuck can a current top 100 death metal/ top heavy metal album of all-time get a 73 out 100. Trust me anyone can get a metal archives account and publish anything they want for any reason, that publication has the stupidity to have a Blink182 fan publish a Metallica “Master of Puppets” 0 out of 100 rating score..!!! And that says everything about metal archives and 100% of the webZines who never had a print edition during the golden ages of heavy metal.

I don’t have to read his strange and bizarre review, i just looked at the score on the internet and looked at score that was recorded in history, in the actual heavy metal community, by the actual heavy metal press.

Who ever wrote that review is going to be shocked to shit, that this MELODIC METAL publication, has a KICK*ASS*METAL HALL OF FAME Wing dedicated to the Death Metal legend….!!!!!!!

You can laugh and pretend that his score is correct, but if you go up against Abnormality, trust me on this, you have zero chance to maybe 9 percent of defeating Abnormality, they are the greatest death metal bands on the planet since 2005 they have been mastering there craft…..!!!!!

For those who know heavy metal you already have 6, 12, 20, 30 copies of this album for your personal collection, for those who were stupid enough to believe that bullshit review, that reviewer fucked you out of $180 of Abnormality CD’s and a hundred dollars in tShirts you did not buy, just reading that one review you got robbed out of a 1/2 a paycheck $300….. since you skipped over a top 10 death metal album of all-time, what ever you bought in it place, is no where at the world-class level of Abnormality “Mechanisms of Omniscience”, even as a casual fan of heavy metal buying 20 CD’s a week, that will be 50,000 albums as a laid-back causal fan 5,000 will be your collection from BIRTH * LIFE * HEAVY METAL *DEATH……!!!!!!!!!!!

If for some strange and bizarre reason you do not have the Abnormality back catalog, make that your next add to collection task and goal, it is bat-shit insane not to have 2 of the top 100 heavy metal/death metal albums of all-time in your album collection!!!!!!

If any publcation does not have

Abnoramality “Contaminating the Hive Mind”

Abnormality “Mechanism of Omniscience”

In either there top 100 heavy metal/death metal albums of all-time list just stop reading them!!!!!!!!

Oh and  besides having 2 of the greatest death metal albums of all-time in her actual history, and having a HEAVY METAL HALL OF FAME WING OF WORLD-CLASS DEATH METAL VOCALIST NAME IN HER HONOR, Mallika Sundramurthy also runs one of the greatest death metal labels of all-time also, …not bad having all those accomplishments and running a top-notch record label…not bad huh????????????  AND THERE IS MORE “Mallika Sundramurthy was a professional graphic and concept artist in the video game industry, working for Harmonix Music Systems. She is currently a freelance artist”…..

https://www.ultimatemassacre.com

maybe fuck all the webzines, and everyone just do their own research, the metal community can only give you the truth on this band being the gold standard in death metal for over 5 years as of December 6th, 2017, now…..what do i got to do? the research, buy the fucking albums, and put them in your fucking collection, what else can we do !!! We did our part

WAKE THE FUCK UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The part of all this that is going to blow your fucking mind, this is a Gothic metal/ avant -garde/ melodic metal / dark glam metal / Gothic symphonic metal publication, i can figure that Abormailty has 2 of the greatest death metal albums of all-time and Mallika Sundramurthy is the GREATEST DEATH METAL VOCALIST OF all-time, so if the dude wearing The Gathering “Mandylion” t-Shirt can figure this out….why can’t you!!!!!

I may have failed Abnormality for not point out this  liable/ slander against them back then, when this revisionism occurred, but where I did not fail this band is that there is a MALLIKA SUNDRAMURTHY KICK*ASS*METAL DEATH METAL HALL OF FAME WING IN HER HONOR, and accomplishments like facts like that is something no-one can ever take away from the achievers in this World……!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those who want to scribble reviews or whatever, the true metal genre is 37 years old, go back to underground year-zero day 1, and grow from there instead of buying the stuff around now-days and just wild guess how history happened.

TOP 100 DEATH METAL ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

Abnormality “Contaminating the Mind Hive”

Abnormality “Mechanisms of Omniscience”

There are two the first 2 are free !!!!! Do some independent research, and learn what a riff is before you even try to just RIFF LORDS AND METAL GODS AND METAL LEGENDS !!!!!!!!!!!

Lets spin the Metal Archives review wheel it is just the greatest death metal vocalist of all-time and the successor album to the most important death metal album of the 21st century…..whoa……..cool dude a 30 out of 100!!!! lets publish that on the metal archives dude !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH HEAVY METAL BIBLE CHAPTER ABNORMALITY ….GOD DAM RIGHT….FUCK IT SHOULD BE CHAPTERS 1 OR CHAPTERS 2 TO SAY THE FUCKING LEAST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Abnormailty Bio

The fertile east coast death metal scene has poured forth some seriously formidable bands over the last decade, but there are few that can match the sheer visceral power and razor-sharp songwriting skills of Marlborough, Massachusetts’ Abnormality. Marrying the ceaseless brutality coming out of New York and New England to the hyper-blasting intensity endemic to Quebecois death metal, the quintet deliver music that is as unrelenting as it is passionate, and with their second full-length, Mechanisms Of Omniscience, they deliver a defiant blow. “The album is total death metal, no bullshit, no fancy shine. This is an album for the blue-collar worker who’s killing him or herself to live, and the kid stuck at home who’s listening on headphones,” states bassist Josh Staples. Moreover, tackling real world issues with intelligence and raw emotion, they create music that both moves and matters. “I am interested in the true nature of the world, the power structure and why the world is the way it is. There are many illusions out there, or blatant lies, rewritten history, and I do my own investigations and attempt to see through falsities. I want to know about human nature, how and why people can be cruel to each other, and why there is so much suffering in the world,” states vocalist Mallika Sundaramurthy, who splits lyric writing duties with drummer Jay Blaisdell. “We write about the destruction of humanity, but we are not for the destruction of humanity.”

Formed in 2005, the band drew its members from the ranks of units such as Teratism, Forced Asphyxiation, Goratory and Sexcrement, and they have worked patiently and persistently to build up a grassroots following, maintaining their integrity while steadily expanding beyond their local scene. While initially envisaged as a side project between Sundaramurthy, Blaisdell and guitarist Jeremy Henry, their intent was to write high quality, technical and heavy music, and as this crystallized a desire to bombard audiences grew. In 2010 they dropped their debut EP The Collective Calm In Mortal Oblivion, which immediately drew attention in the underground, followed by the crushing and critically acclaimed full-length Contaminating The Hive Mind in 2012, cementing their status as one of the heaviest and most dynamic bands in the genre. Importantly, the band have also grown with every release. “Each album has its own feeling and its own variations but remains rooted in the core Abnormality sound,” Sundaramurthy says. “An album documents where we were at in that time and space, what we were thinking and what inspired us then, including world events, politics, and things in our personal lives. There are some consistent elements throughout the discography, but certainly there is an evolution you can follow if you listen to our music chronologically.”

Embracing their network of fans, they have toured extensively and proved themselves a dominating force no matter what size stage they play on, performing from coast to coast and border to border, as well as racking up festival appearances in the United States, Colombia, and Europe. In 2014 they tore up the continent while on the road with Dehumanized, Malignancy and Beneath, and their appearance at The Netherlands’ Neurotic Deathfest was a highpoint for the band. Disinterested in flash-in-the-pan popularity, the band focused on building momentum organically, their reputation growing both through word of mouth and via the many videos posted on YouTube, including the eerie clip for “Monarch Omega”, which has racked up almost 2 million views. With such a fervent following, the band remain fiercely loyal to their fans, reciprocating the love and devotion shown them. “The people who have been with us and supported us from the beginning, it’s crucial to us,” states Henry. “Contrary to popular belief, being a musician in today’s day and age is a shitty prospect. The sacrifices made are overwhelming at times, but it’s those people offering their support that keep you motivated and moving forward, and believing that what you are doing is worthwhile despite an increasingly materialistic and shallow society.”

While 2016 marks the 11th year of Abnormality’s existence, the savage anger and urgency driving Mechanisms Of Omniscience is the sound of the hungriest of bands, generating an intoxicating energy. With the lineup solidifying with recent addition Sam Kirsch on guitar, the band approached the follow-up to Contaminating The Hive Mind with the intent of moving their sound forward, and utilizing the skills of every member of the band has always been important to the Abnormality creative process. “Our newest member, Sam, gave us a new perspective and influence,” adds Henry. “Everyone contributes to the writing process, and it was only natural that someone coming from a different place musically would have an impact on the end result. I think the push and pull from our members’ differing opinions and musical influences lend itself to the musical compositions evolving from song to song and record to record.” This approach ensures that only the strongest emotions are pushed to the surface. Through focusing on individual songs rather than planning out a whole album in advance, it makes for more potent and dynamic songwriting, and by the time they headed into the studio with longtime producer Peter Rutcho, they had ten killer tracks ready to be laid down. “Rutcho has been with us for years now, and that type of familiarity and comfort level cannot be replaced,” says Henry. “He knows all of us in and out, all of our flaws and strengths. He really put his mark on this record as well– there was a lot of sonic production that went into it where his creativity was crucial.” The result of this meeting of minds really does see the band elevated to the proverbial next level. The floodgates open with “Swarm”, a frenzied and contorted sonic assault that destroys everything in its path, and from there on out they don’t let up. Music is rarely uglier or more scathing than that unleashed on “Irreversible”; the grooves and atmospheric textures blended with unrepentant hostility on “Synthetic Pathogenesis” are almost overwhelming, and by the time apocalyptic closer “Consuming Infinity” collapses under its sheer sonic weight, the listener is left feeling brutalized. Still, the music is only part of the picture, and every lyric Sundaramurthy wraps her ferocious roar around is rooted in the ideology of the band. At the core of this is the title track, penned by Blaisdell. “The chorus is ‘The abuse absolute, like a tumor you can’t remove, this cancer spreads to every organ. This prison we live in, mechanisms of omniscience, relying on uniform ignorance’, and the song is about the well established order of control and power in the world,” the drummer explains. “It’s about the people who have the real power and their means and methods of control over us, and how those methods require a level of ignorance on our part in order to be successful. The methods, or mechanisms, exist in many forms. It’s unavoidable and invasive. From the endless wars and atrocities, to the fractional reserve debt slavery, the rigged elections and the criminals who are supposed to represent us, or the blatant spying on everyone and everything by intelligence agencies that are completely out of control. These are just a few of many enormous problems that have grown beyond repair. Mechanisms Of Omniscience is about a monolithic system of control that is so advanced that it not only successfully ensures the same sadistic fucks maintain the power and control they’ve always had, it also does this while convincing everyone else to enjoy their own subjugation, the illusion of being free.” Sundaramurthy concurs with this, and all of the lyrics she writes come from a similarly critical stance, cutting through the lies, and dissecting complex issues without flinching– yet while there are elements of bleakness to this, it is not the whole picture. “My lyrics are rooted in realism, investigation of our reality, spirituality, with a tinge of idealism. I’m curious about where humans came from, where civilization is going, and all the darkness that goes along with those things. I like to look straight into the void of reality, past, present and future, and not shy away from it. Though this may sound nihilistic, I stand for finding and speaking truth, however dreadful it may be. I believe in morality, and in helping the oppressed and voiceless.”

Adding a further dimension to the album’s impact is the artwork, which was also created by Sundaramurthy. While embodying an old school spirit there is something immediate and contemporary about it, encapsulating the violence of the music beyond this image. “I am inspired by old school death metal album covers and also dark fantasy and surrealist artists, such as Zdzisław Beksiński, Wayne Barlowe, and Dan Seagrave, and I went for an abstract approach with the album cover. It is meant to represent the dark emotions and cover some different themes throughout the album songs.”

Armed with the record, and thrilled to have Metal Blade behind them, the band have never been as serious about getting their message out there, as well as ensuring legions of the moshing masses incur whiplash, bloody noses and blown MCLs in the best way possible. While they are understandably proud of the hard work they have put in over the years and the finished product that is Mechanisms Of Omniscience, in many ways they are just getting started. “We would like to keep evolving our brand of aggressive, technical, yet atmospheric death metal into new and unexplored territory,” says Sundaramurthy, but their intentions go much deeper than this, and she makes it clear that the drive and purpose pushing the members of Abnormality has never been more urgent. “The American dream is dead, illusions and fallacies are being exposed; the masses have been sold out to the corporate elite, the planet is being ransacked, and we’re all fucked. We have never been more pissed off and inspired to spread our music and our vision of the brutal realities of our world. The machine that is Abnormality has only gotten stronger and louder over the years. We won’t let up until we leave our mark on the metal scene, and the world.”

Death metal GODS AND HEAVY METAL LEGENDS MORBID ANGEL will UNLEASH upon planet metal their new album, “Kingdoms Disdained”, on December 1 via UDR Music. Recorded at Mana Recording in St. Petersburg, Florida with producer — and former MORBID ANGEL guitarist — Erik Rutan, the LP marks the band’s first release with drummer Scott Fuller (ANNIHILATED, ex-ABYSMAL DAWN) who joined MORBID ANGEL last year following the departure of Tim Yeung. It is also be MORBID ANGEL’s first album to feature bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker since 2003’s “Heretic”.

“Kingdoms Disdained” will include the song “Warped”, which MORBID ANGEL performed live on its recent U.S. tour.

Tucker, who is back for his third spell with the group, told “The Metal Magdalene With Jet” show about MORBID ANGEL’s approach on the upcoming album: “It was really just about writing music — it was just about writing a MORBID ANGEL album. Nobody said, ‘Hey, we wanna go in this direction,’ nobody said anything. I mean, there’s obvious things there. I’ve said it before — I’m a death metal guy, so, for me, it’s gonna be a death metal album; if I’m on it, it’s death metal. So it was just about making a MORBID ANGEL album. It was really about coming in with something new, something fresh, but yet it still being MORBID ANGEL. Really, honestly, we didn’t approach this any differently than any of the other albums I was involved in except for maybe [1998’s] ‘Formulas Fatal To The Flesh’, which ‘Formulas’, Trey [Azagthoth, guitar] wrote all the music, all the lyrics and things like that. But this was done more similar to maybe [2000’s] ‘Gateways To Annihilation’, where everybody had their contribution. Trey wrote a bunch of songs, I wrote songs, Scotty contributed some ideas. There was a lot of back-and-forth. In the end, it has to become a MORBID ANGEL song. And at this point, I feel that it’s very much a MORBID ANGEL album.”

MORBID ANGEL in January announced the addition of Dan Vadim Von (guitarist/frontman of the American death metal band VADIMVON) to the band’s lineup on second guitar. He joined the group as the replacement for Norwegian guitarist Destructhor (a.k.a. Thor Anders Myhren), who left the band two years ago.

Former MORBID ANGEL frontman David Vincent recently joined forces with several other musicians — including Yeung (drums) — to perform classic MORBID ANGEL songs under the I AM MORBID banner.

MORBID ANGEL’s avant-garde metal masterpiece 2011 album, “Illud Divinum Insanus”, marked the group’s first CD to feature Vincent since “Domination”.

The reason Morbid Angel is featured in these pages is because Morbid Angel is 30 years of the World’s Greatest Heavy Metal of all-time and one of the GREATEST HEAVY METAL BANDS OF ALL-TIME. Acutally the Morbid Angel album “Domination” is ranked/ rated as one of the GREATEST TRADITIONAL HEAVY METAL ALBUMS OF ALL-TIME, by hundreds of KICK ASS METAL staffers, but as the Boss, I have the Knowledge to Know that Crest of Darkness “The Ogress” is the greatest heavy metal album of all-time, which has been a undisputed fact @ KICK ASS METAL since it was unleashed upon Planet Metal, back in May 12th, 1999, KICK ASS METAL is a GOTHIC age/ Avant-Garde age/ Death Metal age publication and Crest of Darkness has all 3 of those factors to perfection…..so that is the objective/subjective aspect of that fact. Morbid Angel as a traditional heavy metal band, as well as a death metal band has 6 albums in the top 100 heavy metal albums of all-time, in the traditional metal realm, those album are Abominations of Desolation 1986/19991 — Altars of Madness — Blessed are the Sick — Covenant —- Domination and —- Entangled in Chaos, as a traditional metal and extreme metal fan, all of those 6 albums also belong on the top 100 extreme metal albums of all-time, also. As a Avant-Garde Age Publication, the Avant-Garde Metal Community championed the Avant-Garde Metal Timeless Masterpiece “Illud Divimum Insanus”….which that article has now been pulled but I have a photographic memory so I remember that article being published, because I have a print out of it as I went to the record store for that album, since it achieved the status of being, SUPREME IMMORATAL METALLIC ART OF THE HIGHEST ORDER FROM THE GOTHIC METAL/ AVANT-GARDE METAL COMMUNITY !!!! I have been going to the record store 3 to 4 times a week since October 1st, 1982, when I lived 3 blocks away, 900 feet awasy from a METAL ELITIST / METAL ONLY record shoppe !!!!!
Morbid Angel is one of the few artist from the GOLDEN AGE OF HEAVY METAL. AUGUST 1ST, 1981 TO OCTOBER 31ST, 1986, to be covered in these pages. Motörhead, Morbid Angel are two bands that never sold-out or washed-up and washed-out like every 1980’s heavy metal bands. 1980’s heavy metal artist could not cut it in the 1990’s…first wash-ups and sell-outs in 1985 and the genre being THE LAUGHING STOCK OF heavy metal community, skateboards and Bermuda shorts…etc….!!!  That is the reason the Death Metal age happened and is still the zeitgeist of the genre. And the Genre got a crushing blow When Metallica unleashed upon Planet GLAM METAL the timeless AOR/GLAM Metal masterpiece Metallica “Metallica” on August 12, 1991 the Mötley Crüe-esque Metallica “Metallica” even getting Mötley Crüe’s producer to achieve the AOR/Glam Metal/ Hair Metal/ Los Angels Metal sound and style…..As a Glam Metal fan I claim Metallica “Metallica” as one of our own….and appears on the top 100 GLAM METAL ALBUMS OF ALL-TIME LIST, and is a KICK ASS METAL HEAVY METAL HALL OF FAME album in the GLAM METAL category. Most of the sell-out thrash metal albums are perfect for a GLAM METAL RECORD COLLECTION — Metallica “Metallica”, Megadeath “Countdown to Extinction” Testament “Practice What Your Preach”. As a gothic metal age publication there is no such thing as selling out in OUR genre, but Heavy Metal is the only genre where this phenomena/ selling out occurs….and seeing Metal bands sellout is not only fascinating, put kind of cool really seeing Metal bands cater to the people who hated them since day one, while betraying the fanbase who made them millions and legends in the first place. As a gothic metal fan, I know the difference between hard rock and heavy metal and gothic metal, and it is cool to watch almost every song-writer from the 1980’s to be fascinated with the Popular Culture song-writing formula. It still listen to Classical Music and Heavy Metal/ Gothic Metal 50/50. It helps keeps me geared toward the gothic/avant-garde side of heavy metal!! Keep in Mind Thrash Metal was already dead, wash-up, and sold-out long before Metallica released a album Metallica “Metallica” on August 12th, 1991…. which has more in common with Pantera’s “Power Metal” Mötley Crüe “Too Fast for Love”, Mötley Crüe “Shout at the Devil” and WASP “WASP” instead of Tyges of Pan Tang “WildCat”. Were just letting you know the actual subjective/objective facts as why Metallica was a KILLER METAL band for just say 5 years and Morbid Angel achieved 30 years of the greatest heavy metal band of all-time !!!

Lady Beast to appear on CNN TV show ‘Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown’ on October 22nd

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA heavy metal rockers Lady Beast will be appearing on the television show Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown on CNN during the episode airing on October 22, 2017.

The press release states:

“The Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown episode airing October 22, 2017 will feature a performance by Pittsburgh metal heroes Lady Beast.

Lady Beast has achieved global recognition for their hard hitting, DIY approach to traditional, NWOBHM inspired heavy metal, becoming torch bearers for the movement wherever they are heard. Known for their prowess on stage, Lady Beast was selected to appear on Parts Unknown based not only on their music, but also the overwhelming love bestowed on them by Pittsburgh’s metal scene. Fronted by bewitching performer Deb Levine and featuring the shredding twin guitar attack of Christopher ‘Twiz’ Trichler and Andy Ramage, the rhythm is held down by the World-Class bass of Greg Colazzi and drummer Adam Ramage’s speed metal metallic mayhem.

“We’re flying the flag for traditional heavy metal,” said Adam in the band’s March 2015 Pittsburgh City Paper cover story, and it is a point impossible to argue. Also seen in Bandcamp’s Twelve Metal Bands That Put the Emphasis on Shredding, webZines such as  KICK ASS METAL,  Metal Maidens…..  and having played with acts like St. Vitus, Deceased

Parts Unknown will show the world that Lady Beast have the chops to hold down the big stages and since Lady Beast is a top 100 heavy metal band and with the metal elite, in terms of authenticity, riffing abilities, song-writing and feature a World-Class Vocalist in Debroah Levine, and are a KICK ASS METAL HEAVY METAL HALL OF FAME BAND, with 3 albums appearing in our top 100 albums, even making the top 100/top150 of all-time list!!!

Lady Beast’s catalog and merch can be found on Bandcamp, encompassing their albums Lady Beast, Lady Beast II, and the EP Metal Immortal. The band is primed and ready for their national TV debut, and will be putting the momentum into their upcoming full length Vicious Breed on Cruz de la Sur Music. Their music has garnered raves worldwide, but once experienced live metal fans will scream for more!

See Lady Beast on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown Sunday, October 22nd at 9pm on CNN.”

Lady Beast have released three albums to date ALL KICK ASS METAL HEAVY METAL HALL OF FAME ALBUMS —Lady Beast (2012), Lady Beast II (2015) and Metal Immortal (2016) — and will be releasing a new studio album Vicious Breed in early 2018.

KICK ASS METAL RATING

100 OUT OF 100 BLOOD DRIPPING SKULLS — FUCKING ESSENTIAL

There are a few major GOLDEN AGES OF HEAVY METAL, the first one being the Golden Age of Heavy Metal which was from August 1st, 1981 to October 31st, 1986, for Traditional Metal/ Power Metal/ Thrash Metal and Glam Metal also was a genius heavy metal genre during this era.

The Golden Age of Death Metal because of the collapse of thrash metal and all the bands selling out, first in 1985, then 1987, from a phenomena, called the “Slow Down Syndrome”, where thrash metal artist were writing thrash metal albums for heavy metal fans, who hated the style in the first place…. and if those bands survived that they did not survive the collapse of the actual genre by October 31st, 1991, when all the clubs closed down, and Metallica “Metallica”, which we have listed as a hair metal hall of fame album in this publication, a album which had more in common with Motley Crue, W.A.S.P, and the MTV power ballad armada, a couple of grab your lighter in the air songs are on Metallica “Metallica”  then there roots of Satan, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Jaguar, Holocaust….the Death Metal age started in June 24th, 1990 with the album Deicide “Deicide” on RoadraceR Records and for almost 30 years been the genre with the most sincerity and the genre with the most bands, who have the original savage factor from the debut albums. Does heavy metal publications even cover thrash metal any more as a genre, washed like the NWOBHM genre which has been dead since August 1st, 1983 with its last classic album being released in March 1oth, 1986 Deep Switch “Nine Inches of God”

The Golden Age of Avant-Garde Metal is from July 27th, 2004 to July 27th, 2014 to December 22nd, 2015 ….where this genre had its own webZine and all the bands were a million miles ahead of the other bands in the heavy metal genre as well as the other 1,300 music genres around, these days.

The Golden Age of Gothic Metal was from January 1st 1993 to July 27th, 2004, in other words the first TRUE NORWEGIAN GOTHIC METAL bands releasing demos to Cradle of Filth “Damnation and a Day” .

This album is being featured because of it being a top 10 and top 100 album in 3 to 4 different categories. For those new to heavy metal and not around, as a true fan, and a concert-goer in 2002 this is the year

TOP 10  2002 Heavy Metal albums list looked like this alphabetical order

Since the band founded in 1997 and today’s news date is September 6th, 2017 — 20 years GOING ON

30 YEARS OF THE GREATEST HEAVY METAL BAND OF ALL-TIME…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So the heavy metal bible aka the KICK ASS METAL PAGES, does need a Madder Mortem Chapter, no fucking doubt about that!!!!

One of the reason these pages exist, in the event you are new to heavy metal, alwasy start with bands THAT NEVER SOLD-OUT…..!!! and if you lose everything in a fire, or a natural disaster a act of god!!! and you lose your recrod collection and your record collectors list….these pages will refresh your memory of the top 100 heavy metal bands of all-time….

As a Death Metal-age, Gothic Metal-age, Avant-Garde Metal-age Publication….we were not even the first one, the publication this webZine is modeled after was called Ill-Literature then the next one, as a successor to that publication is Avant-Garde Metal webZine and print editions, and our other most obvious influences are Sonic Cathderal and Metal Maidens webZine….!!! And from there i read the best specialized press in each sub-genre !!!!

Madder Mortem has 4 albums in top 100’s in various heavy metal genres….not bad huh? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Below is a CD review on the GODLY Avant-Garde Metal webzine and covers the album Madder Mortem “Eight Ways” of course is a top 100 HEAVY METAL ALBUM OF ALL-TIME ALSO
I would never have thought that, of all things, such an incredible album like MADDER MORTEM’s latest work “Eight Ways” would cause such problems when writing a review! For instance there is a certain fear creeping in my head, ever since I started thinking about how to put my impressions into words – the fear of losing the magic of this album. On one hand this surely has to be expected for music of this gauge (in other words: I should have known before), on the other hand this probably is the “curse” of being a writer for a magazine (in other words: I should have known before)…

The second problem is: Where do I start to describe the fifth album of these five Norsemen round the siblings Agnete and BP M. Kirkevaag? I already mentioned that “Eight Ways” has become an outstanding album – but where exactly do I dive deeper into MADDER MORTEM’s world? I believe that some focused glimpse on certain details couldn’t do the album any justice; hence it is very hard for me to swoop down on particular instruments or songs.
For all those who are familiar with the last releases of MADDER MORTEM, it should be pointed out that the course they adopted with “Desiderata” has been pursued and intensified, “Eight Ways” sounds in every way deeper, more mature and more touching than its predecessor. All other readers should continue now, in order to get an impression of the offered music without knowing the back catalogue.

So let me start with the impression as a whole, before I try to enlighten particular aspects of “Eight Ways”: MADDER MORTEM know exactly what they do. Every riff, every break, every single tune is exactly in the right place, it is unbelievable. What does “right” mean here? – “Eight Ways” carries me off emotionally to such an extent music hasn’t been able to for a rather long time (I would even dare speak of years), THAT means “right”! The songs are traversed by melancholy, sadness, anger, despair and many blends, so massively and authentically that listening to the album continually gives me the creeps or brings tears to my eyes. I am dead serious about that.

A huge share in that – and by this we are at the start of a more detailed description – has singer Agnete whose voice is absolutely unique. Whoever thinks of Tarja Turunen or Liv Kristine when hearing the term “Gothic Metal” and expects something similar from MADDER MORTEM, has already lost the game. This is about emotions and not about trivial trilling as contrast to a Metal background. It’s about emotions Agnete transports in an impressive way – I don’t know anyone who is able to sound such desperate, to put so much anger into her voice and, in addition, is able to mix up several emotions seam- and apparently effortlessly. From a technical point of view she’s on a high level as well; not only the vocal lines deserve the attribute “unusual”, her range, both with head and chest voice, is sheer madness.

Agnete’s voice is surely anything but contrast, it perfectly blends into the instrumental context, just as if it was an additional instrument which completes the picture. And, just as in paintings every color is important for the whole picture, the guitars, the bass and the drums are in no way some kind of backing. The guitars, audibly seven-string guitars, move in a huge scope – fat, thrashy riffs appear as well as bluesy insertions, acoustic passages meet almost Black Metal-like leads, here and there some kind of tango (“Get That Monster Out Of Here”) or a Metal soundtrack to a Tim Burton-movie (“The Flesh The Blood The Man”). The golden thread is always visible though. Same goes for the very well audible bass and the impulsive drums. It is noticeable that MADDER MORTEM work as a band, that every member follows the same vision on “Eight Ways”. This vision is also conveyed by the transparent, yet very fat production which illuminates every detail and thus provides every song with the perfect sound.

And here comes the third problem which I stumbled upon while writing this review: How can I describe “Eight Ways” to my readers in a suitable way, how can I make my favorite for the “album of the year”-award palatable to him or her? If you, dear reader, have sat through until here and got a rough imagination of what “Eight Ways” caused in me, I already have solved this problem

We are sad to announce that BSR has come to an end. After 5 years, it is time for us to part our separate ways. Mason and Aiden have simply decided to move on in another direction without us, and although it sucks, we humbly respect that decision and wish them the best of luck. There’s no bad blood between any of us, we will always still be brothers (and sister). We want to thank all of you so much for supporting us throughout the years. We truly appreciate everything everyone has done for us to get us where we have gone. Nothing could ever replace all of the memories and accomplishments we’ve made. So help us create one last incredible memory. Bad Seed Rising will be playing at the Carroll County Arts Center in Westminster, MD on Mon, Sep 11, at 7:00 PM. You can purchase tickets at the door or online. Link will be in our bio. Please help us make this last hurrah amazing. Thank you all so much, we hope to see you guys there. Love, Francheska, Mason, Louey, and Aiden.”

The members who left Bad Seed Rising both tweeted the news as well, telling fans to “keep your eyes peeled on new shit.” They say there are no hard feelings but that they wanted to move on.

There’s no word yet on what’s going to come of the Bad Seed Rising album that was supposed to be released on Roadrunner Records this fall.

We wish all the members luck in their future endeavors—-and since Francheska Pastor is a KICK*ASS*METAL HEAVY METAL HALL OF INDUCTION DATE OF  September 30, 2016, as a Alternative Metal LEGEND, even if we the band started off in the hard rock/ hair metal direction on the “606” EP in September 2012, playing KICK ASS METAL in the vein of Girlschool !!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will be following the career of Francheska Pastor since the main topic of KICK ASS METAL, just like Sonic Cathedral, Metal Maidens, Femme Metal, Ravenheart Music, Black Phoenix Rising Metal, is hard rock, Avant-garde, classical music, heavy metal artist featuring a WORLD-CLASS VOCALIST….!!!!

I Can Feel You (Single, out June 24, 2016)

“Nightmares are my favorite dreams. They’re the only ones I have – at least what I can remember,” says vocalist Francheska Pastor. ‘I Can Feel You’ is an audio and video rendition of one certain dream I had about running away from something terrifyingly familiar on a train with a bag of nails weighing me down. I fall off the train trying to hide in tall grass and I see a snake coming to attack me and ends up strangling me. I remember waking up with scratches on my chest. I guess I thought it was really happening. I took some time and reflected that dream to real life and realized that the bag of nails are emotional baggage that’s stopping my mental growth. The snake the truth that I’ve been hiding for years, and it’s eventually coming back to bite me. And it did. I just thought that this dream alone was so introspective and somehow clairvoyant that I wanted to write about it. So we wrote ‘I Can Feel You.’

THE YOUNGEST BANDS IN HARD ROCK & HEAVY METAL HISTORY TO BE INDUCTEED INTO HALL OF FAMES, IN THIS CASE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE KICK ASS METAL HEAVY METAL HALL OF FAME AND THE KICK ASS METAL ORIGINAL MUSIC HALL OF FAME IS DEATH ANGEL , BAD SEED RISING, AND ANTI-TRUST from Las Vegas, Nevada !!…ALL 3 of these artist just inducted as HEAVY METAL artist because we categorized Bad Seed Rising as a Alternative HEAVY METAL band, put them in the KICK ASS METAL HEAVY METAL HALL OF FAME as opposed to the KICK ASS METAL ORIGINAL MUSIC HALL OF FAME!!!!

This Nuclear Blast from the Past is a all-time top 100 gothic rock/ gothic metal album of all-time, since Evanescence has a transcendence to there artistic vision, there is also elements of Symphonic Metal, Alternative Metal as well as NuMETAL….But this is a Gothic Metal publication in the Avant-garde-age as well as the Death Metal-age.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF HEAVY METAL IS FROM AUGUST 1ST, 1981 TO OCTOBER 31ST, 1986

THE GOLDEN AGE OF EXTREME METAL IS FROM AUGUST 1ST, 1983 TO OCTOBER 31ST, 1986

THE GOLDEN AGE OF GOTHIC METAL IS FROM JANUARY 1ST, 1993 TO JULY 27TH, 2003

This album was UNLEASHED ON PLANET METAL ON March 4th, 2003 @ the tail-end of the Golden Age of Gothic Metal. So not only is a top 100 heavy metal album of all-time — pick a genre NuMEtal, Alternative Metal, Symphonic Metal, or Gothic Metal….!!! I was really expecting this album to be slandered, by the likes of Metal-Archives and or BNR Pages, but neither of those publications have a Evanescence Encyclopedia Metallic entry over-there. I love reading up on the top 100 heavy metal albums of all-time and like to see how bad the quality control is over @ Metal Archives, there is none….!!!! The page has over a billion errors on the 117,000 bands they cover over there, the review section of course has more errors in this one publication that the whole internet combined, since the internet happened on April 1st, 1995 !!!! This is one of those albums if your a fan of World-Class Heavy Metal with a World-Class Vocalist, then you have multiple copies of this in your serious metallic collection!! I live by the US/Canadian Border, when this KICK ASS METAL album was unleashed on Planet Metal on so I am using the Canadian Epic/Wind-Up Records Import version — EPIC RECORDS — EK 91746 for this NUCLEAR BLAST FROM THE PAST !!!!

First and Last and Always”, to name a specific metal genre as gothic, which makes the oh-so renowned and overabused gothic metal term, this specific metal genre MUST have references and influences from the gothic rock/dark wave scene from the 80s. Apparently, without any second thought and a shadow of doubt, many bands from this so-called commercial and big scene are not gothic metal because they have not a single reference from the gothic rock/dark wave scene of the 80s. It really is something funny for metalheads that know nothing about this scene to speak about gothic music. But what is even more funny is the fact that part of the metal scene dislikes goths and when you ask them “which people do you refer to as goths?” you get the answer “those people, man, that paint their eyes black and listen to Marilyn Manson endlessly”, even from this you can get that a big part of the metal scene really has nothing to do in knowledge and experience about the gothic subculture, its bands and its audience. And thus this over-confusion passes in the gothic metal scene.

You see, the gothic subculcture has all these chicks dressed in black, with the cute faces, the beautiful make up and stuff, yes, I know, they are beautiful, I adore them as well, but, sadly, when a female-fronted metal band starts sounding a bit more symphonic/atmospheric or even a bit melancholic and has a female singer, preferably cute that stands as the front of the band and wears all these beautiful scarlet or velvet or black dresses with flowers and stuff, people start referring to this band as gothic metal, for no reason apparently. A female singer that has a more obscure and “poetic” dress-code won’t make a band a gothic one, apparently, it’s the music that matters, not the supposed dress-code. And so we come to bands like Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Epica, After Forever and so on, well, these bands have nothing to do, more or less each one of them (or used to have a slight reference but they have nothing to do anymore), with the gothic metal genre, the only common thing they have as bands is that they are female-fronted, does this make them gothic metal? No, for fuck’s sake no! Ok, they have their own atmosphere each one of them, they have some strong female vocalists, some good tunes, others more others less, but that’s all people; no gothic elements, no gothic metal.

If you want some bands with female vocalists that actually play gothic metal then you should definitely check Tristania of the first era (who can deny that “Widow’s Weeds” has gothic rock elements? I’ll give the answer, no-one can because these elements are present in the guitar work; and let’s not forget the gothic rock guest male vocals on “Angellore” ), Theatre Of Tragedy of the first three releases, yes, they are gothic metal, and not because Liv Kristine used to wear black dresses and have that absolute female gothic look, just check the music, apparently gothic metal, then come Trail Of Tears, their first releases are also strong and gothic metal, really good work and it seems to me at times that the gothic metal scene including female vocals blossomed in Norway, judging from the bands I mentioned above. And of course I shouldn’t skip to mention Sirenia, the band Morten Veland formed after he left Tristania, another wonderful gothic metal act, with intense gothic rock elements, even the hat in the vein of The Sisters Of Mercy/The Fields Of The Nephilim is present, hehe (if you don’t believe me ask Mr. Veland and check Elusive’s debut album, “Destination Zero”, to see which are his influences; for the history, Elusive are a rising gothic rock act from Norway and Veland played the guitars on this album) and of course I shouldn’t skip to mention Beseech, they have female vocals as well in their compositions, but they are a 50%-50% female-male fronted band now, with balanced male and female vocals. Just check their first two releases, pure romantic gothic/doom metal with The Fields Of The Nephilim references being too intense, both in guitar parts filled with gothic rock riffing and vocal lines in which the first singer of the band sounds like a reincarnation of Carl McCoy. And of course I shouldn’t skip to mention As Divine Grace from Finland, they used to be a romantic doom/death metal act but with years they became more gothic metal oriented, with female vocals, a really strong band that sadly disbanded.

You know, a band to be called gothic metal must have references from the gothic rock/dark wave scene as I said above, which means, Christian Death (with Rozz Williams on the vocals of course, hehehe! Or Valor of “Atrocities”, it was an awesome album, i have to admit it! And why not “Sex & Drugs & Jesus Christ”, their last really strong album with Valor!), The Mission, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Fields Of The Nephilim, Bauhaus, early The Cult, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Clan Of Xymox, Virgin Prunes, early Dead Can Dance etc must be present, with each band sticking to its own references. And what the history has shown to me is that whenever gothic rock acts started turning heavier and more metal-oriented they made far better work from gothic metal acts, because gothic rockers really know what to do, they have the feeling in their blood, it’s flowing, they know how to express it correctly and make it sound heavier if they want to enter a heavier sound stage. And of course I will mention some gothic rock/metal acts and first and above all one of the best gothic acts of the 90s that most of you don’t know, DREADFUL SHADOWS, listen to them to feel the decadence, the sorrow, the pain, the gothic aesthetic, the gothic feeling from a band that released four great albums and with every album it tended to sound steps further, reaching “The Cycle” where more modern references made their appearance. After Dreadful Shadows sadly disbanded Sven Friedrich and Norman Selbig of Dreadful Shadows formed Zeraphine, another wonderful gothic rock/metal act with a more modern approach of course. Another fabulous gothic rock/metal act have to be Scream Silence, at times tending to sound like Dreadful Shadows, but they tended to perfect their own sound, their first two album are the most metallic ones and the other three are heavy still, but more gothic rock definitely; at times they tend to have a doomy feeling as well. Secret Discovery is a good band as well, moving in pure gothic rock in their early years and from a moment and on they started sounding a lot more metallic. Also, Love Like blood is a gothic rock band ,one of the best if you ask me, they have released some really strong opuses during the first half of the 90s, in the second half of the 90s from a moment and on they started sounding heavy and “Snakekiller” is a good gothic metal/rock album. Take Garden of Delight now, one of the best gothic rock acts of the 90s, they released in 7 years 7 albums with 7 songs each one of them, they disbanded afterwards, after the first circle had ended. They came back in the 00s, stronger, heavier, more powerful, but above all gothic rock. After 4 albums they formed Lutherion and they definitely are gothic metal/rock now, sounding really heavy, gothic rock-oriented and with an electro touch as well! Most and above all I shouldn’t forget to mention the metal approach of Carl McCoy, first with The Nefilim in the second half of the 90s and recently with the dynamic come back of the Fields Of The Nephilim. “Zoon” of the Nefilim was a brilliant piece of thrash/death metal blended with strong doses of gothic rock in the renowned McCoy n’ Fields vein and “Mourning Sun” of The Fields Of The Nephilim is an album of pure gothic rock/metal, a really strong release to show to the gothic metal scene who can rule the scene in no time. And let’s mention NFD, a The Nefilim oriented project, heavy enough and always gothic rock and another project from members of The Nefilim, Saints Of Eden, gothic rock with heavy doses of metal and electronic/industrial elements, sounding really heavy and definitely really strong!

Now concerning some gothic metal acts I should mention Evereve of their first era with Tom Schedotschenko, heart-rending, twisted, mourning gothic metal from the pits of Hell, utterly desolate and melancholic, with the ideal references! After the suicide of the singer a new singer came on board and they released an easier album, gothic metal still, afterwards they started moving in more electronic soundscapes. Darkseed as well, they definitely had gothic-oriented references in albums like “Diving Into Darkness” and “Give Me Light” etc, a good band definitely. Paradise Lost OF COURSE and no matter how much doomsters hit their asses on the wall and point out that “Gothic” is doom/death metal I will always be there to be a pain in the ass and their closed mind to point out that it is one of the first pure gothic metal releases, not because of the name, “Gothic”, but because of the music. Listen carefully, the gothic rock references on the guitars are too obvious, where Sisters Of Mercy stepped Paradise Lost found water. The orchestrations have a Celtic Frost sense from the “Into The Pandemonium” era and a dark wave aesthetic as well along with the fragile female vocals that seem to have come out of the 80s dark wave scene. Sure, it has a doom sense, but think about it more. Paradise Lost continued as a gothic metal act after “Shades Of God” (which was doom metal at all costs) releasing many fabulous albums like “Draconian times”, “Icon”, “One Second”, “Paradise Lost” etc, one of the best acts of the gothic metal scene. I shouldn’t skip Lacrimosa, one of the most important acts of this very scene; i have heard/read that they are progressive gothic metal, this statement always sounded funny to me from people that really have absolutely nothing to do with the scene. Tilo Wolf is a pure genius, from the gothic-death rock/dark wave oriented first releases of Lacrimosa to the historic moment when Anne Nurmi entered the band and Lacrimosa started becoming metal, gothic metal of course! Because the references remained, the doses of classical music became too obvious and one of the characteristic parts of the sound of the band. Generally they kept the Lacrimosa feeling alive, they just became one of the most quality, recognisable and best acts of the scene. Lacrimas Profundere, from a romantic doom/death metal act they started slowly and steadily incorporating in their sound gothic references reaching nowadays where they are a goth n’ roll act, slightly metal, more of a rock band, gothic rock with a poser attitude. And since I mentioned the poser attitude of Lacrimas Profundere I shouldn’t skip at all to mention The 69 Eyes, a non-metal band, they are goth n’ roll as well, at some times offering more more romantic gothic rock like on “Paris Kills”, at others more hard rock/gothic rock having several references from the 80s/early 90s. Where the Sisters Of Mercy left “Vision Thing” and The Cult left their releases Jyrki, Jussi and their companions stole them and found out many useful things for the now-sound of The 69 Eyes and Jyrki where Ian Astbury and the singer of LA Guns stood proud stole a bit of their pride to form his stage presence. So no, The 69 Eyes are not metal, poser gothic rock or goth n’ roll yes, definitely. A! Beyond Dawn’s “Pity Love” shouldn’t be missing from here as well, an album having the decadence of doom, references from the doom metal scene and of course intense The Sisters Of Mercy passages, both in structure and guitar parts, but always tending to present them through their very own and unique avant-garde prism. I shouldn’t forget to mention, just for the history, that Beyond Dawn during that period were supporting the Sisters Of Mercy at some of their shows, not a coincidence, is it? I shouldn’t skip Tiamat, they had a good course changing their sound from album to album, progressing positively, and as you all noticed they had their gothic rock-driven moments as well. Their latest release to date “Prey” was a metallic gothic rock worship with Edlund’s haunting vocals entrancing the atmosphere, “Skeleton Skeletron” had also a gothic rock air, quite modern in sound, good enough but nothing awesome and “A Deeper Kind Of Slumber” which was a mixture of psychedelic rock with gothic rock and stuff, good work! And some of you that may know, Johan Edlund has a gothic rock oriented band, Lucyfire, good stuff. Also, The Babylon Whores, not many know them, but they are awesome, a metal-driven Christian Death worship band, they know what they are doing, really good act! Another bright example of a band that injected intense 80s gothic/dark elements have to be Portugal’s finest and most known act, Moonspell, with bands like “The Antidote”, “Sin/Pexado” (a very underrated album), “Darkness And Hope” and “Irreligious”, they have to be one of those bands that interpret gothic metal in a really good and personal manner! Also, a new band around that had quite an impressive course so far with their two releases are definitely The Vision Bleak, travelling through the corridors of nightmares, drama, horror and gothic decadence they offer a new and fresh air to the scene! Also, Yearning from Finland are doing a good job with their esoteric and beautifully adorned by sadness and esoteric emotions gothic/doom metal. Last but not least Kreator’s “Endorama” is a thousand times more gothic metal than all those so-called gothic metal bands that are being referred as gothic metal by the silly music press and the audience that knows nothing about what is gothic, doesn’t “Endorama” sound so gothic metal to you? Change scene! It’s so simple!

The problem with the gothic metal scene doesn’t end here, there are two more problems with the scene except for the female-fronted bands that are mostly being referred by both press and audience as gothic metal and of course i’m referring to part of the Visual Kei scene and the Suomi Metal scene with bands tending to sound romantic, melancholic or suicidal, moving in metal/rock soundscapes with common road on their course being the melancholy factor. Concerning the Visual Kei scene with bands like Moi Dix Mois, Malice Mizer and stuff, they have an intense gothic aesthetic in their appearance, but this is the most gothic part of their existence, their music apart from some keyboard-driven really dark passages has nothing to do with the gothic rock/dark wave scene and the Bauhaus references in those bands that i have read somewhere is definitely non-existent and i know Bauhaus really well to not recognise them in a band. Well, part of the Visual Kei that is being referred as gothic metal could be the Japanese option of gothic metal, somethng different, something “foreign” to the European scene/audience, so I won’t be absolute in this case. I have to admit, anytime with the hand on my heart, that those Visual Kei bands are more gothic than all the other female-fronted or Suomi “we’re supposed to be gothic” metal bands will ever be, both in reality and dreams. And let’s move to the Suomi metal scene, believe me, I used to be a huge fan of this very specifc scene supporting bands like HIM, Entwine, For My Pain, Poisonblack, Charon, Sentenced, Lullacry, To Die For etc, I still support Entwine, HIM and To Die For because all those three are bands that have a lot to offer in my opinion, but really, where did you people find all these gothic elements in their compositions? You can always inform me because I’m craving to know more about gothic music and I would love to find out where all these elements hide and I can’t find them. I had read somewhere that Sentenced were gothic metal and on their latest releases they became gothic rock, HA HA! I mean, how funny is that? Only a metalhead that knows nothing about the gothic scene would ever say that, and a metalhead was indeed the person who said that. Ignorance is bad, definitely bad, and in this case ignorance has caused a lot of harm, something that disgusts me seeing it going on more and more day by day.

Well, I got bored writing and I think you’ll get bored reading too, so I will stop for now, but I will have to warn all of you i-know-it-all metalheads (to avoid misunderstandings, I’m not referring to every single metalhead, but to a specific part of it) that will give my article a shot, “if the truth hurts, prepare for pain”. Kisses!
